New Regulations for Tax Preparers
Under a new bill recently signed into law, all persons offering individual tax preparation services must become licensed with the State Board of Individual Tax Preparers by June 1, 2010. Tax preparers seeking additional information are encouraged to visit the Dept. of Labor, Licensing & Regulation Web site.

Board of Revenue Estimates Announces Revised FY 2009 Figures
The state Board of Revenue Estimates, made up of Comptroller Peter Franchot, Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Department of Budget and Management Secretary T. Eloise Foster today released revised revenue figures for fiscal year 2009 and the first official estimates for fiscal year 2010. The board also provided analysis.

Comptroller's Office Seizes Nearly 17,000 Packs of Illegal Cigarettes
Annapolis, Md. (November 21, 2008) - After receiving a tip from a Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA) officer, agents for Comptroller Peter Franchot confiscated nearly 17,000 packs of contraband cigarettes and arrested one woman Wednesday along Interstate 95 in Baltimore. Officer G. Day of the MdTA Police noticed a large quantity of cigarettes in the vehicle during a routine traffic stop and requested the assistance of the Comptroller’s Office Field Enforcement Division.

Franchot Warns Marylanders About Email Scam Disguised as IRS Stimulus Refund
ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 19, 2008) - Working to protect Marylanders from scams that threaten their financial security, Comptroller Peter Franchot today issued a warning after being advised by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of a phishing scheme which involves an attempt to trick taxpayers into supplying personal and financial information to fraudulent websites. The primary means of transmission of the scam is through email. The email is disguised with subject headers designed to intrigue the reader to open the email and/or attachments.

Comptroller Makes Services More Accessible with State Insurance Administration Partnership
Annapolis, MD (November 14, 2008) - Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced a new partnership with the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA). In an effort to bring government services more directly to Marylanders, insurance officials will be visiting five Comptroller branch offices around the state.

Comptroller Franchot Claims Another Victory Against Corporate Tax Scofflaws
Annapolis, MD (October 27, 2008) - Comptroller Peter Franchot announced today that subsidiaries of the popular retail chain Nordstrom, Inc. were found liable to Maryland for corporate income taxes due from tax years 2002 and 2003. The Maryland Tax Court ordered Nordstrom to pay the state $1,264,864 in back taxes plus interest and ten percent in penalties. This case was the most recent victory for the Comptroller's office in an aggressive effort to crack down on corporations avoiding taxes using Delaware Holding Company tax schemes and other tax avoidance strategies. To date, the Comptroller's office has collected more than $267 million in taxes through Delaware Holding Company cases, and has an additional $143 million in outstanding assessments against corporations using this tax-avoidance system.
