Be the Person You Are Capable Of
A. Harrison Barnes | Dated: 12-02-2008
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

More lawyers won't take Chance on Clifford
by EmploymentCrossing.com
http://www.LawCrossing.com
Clifford Chance's US litigation practice has been hit with a second round of partner defections in under a month.
Just seven weeks after the firm laid off 20 litigation associates in the States, former US head John Carroll and New York partners Warren Feldman and David Meister are leaving over what may be a pay dispute.
The news comes less than a month after two Washington, DC litigators, Jon Roellke and Boyd Cloern, left for Boston's Bingham McCutchen.
Once a promising practice group with a client base that included top firms like Merrill Lynch, Clifford Chance's litigation group is struggling to survive after a lack of work and dwindling profits spurred layoffs and defections.
With the latest partners ankling because of a dispute over their super-point status, the firm is clearly still plagued by the pay concerns that have dogged its US operation for years.
Clifford Chance LLP is the largest law firm in the world, both by number of lawyers and by revenue, and is a component of the UK's "Magic Circle" of leading law firms. It is a prestigious international practice with its principal office at Canary Wharf in London.

DLA Piper may cut 40 "redundancies"
by EmploymentCrossing.com
http://www.LawCrossing.com
Global law firm DLA Piper launched a redundancy consultation today, that could lead to up to 40 job losses across its UK offices
The review flies in the face of repeated denials from the firm in response to long-circulating rumors of job cuts.
The firm is also to retrain 20 lawyers to join the restructuring practice, following a surge in demand for insolvency advice.
While many firms are looking for redundancies, there are still firms that are trying to buck the trend and anticipate measured growth during the recession.
DLA Piper is one of the largest law firms in the world and it is the only firm with more than 3,500 lawyers in North America and Europe. DLA Piper is a legal services organization whose members and affiliates are separate and distinct legal entities.

2008 Bonus Levels Down Among Davis Polk, Other Major Law Firms
By Erin Broadhurst
12/02/2008
When the end of the year rolls around, most associates at big law firms have one word on the brain: bonus. Bonuses, according to law firm consulting group Altman Weil, are usually at least 10% of in individual's base pay and awarded when an individual's performance exceeds that expected for his/her base pay. When employees make an ''exceptional contribution'' to the organization, one way of rewarding them is to hand a very small number of large bonuses. Another common method of awarding bonuses is to compensate those who measurably outperform their pier group. Firms calculate bonuses to ensure that they are at a competitive level with similar firms.

Holder First African-American Attorney General
President-elect Barack Obama officially announced December 1, 2008, that he will nominate Eric Holder for the position of U.S. Attorney General. If Holder is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, he will become the first African American to occupy this position. It would be truly historic if the first African-American president and the first African-American Attorney General ascend to their offices at the same time.
Holder's nomination has already drawn some spirited views from both parties. Many people fully support his nomination and already look forward to Holder's top priorities of reforming the Justice Department to bring back its credibility and boost its reputation after controversies surrounding both its hiring practices and its anti-terror regulations gave it a face the public has not admired much of late. There are others, however, who look upon Holder's past support of a presidential pardon for a financier named Marc Rich, who had spent several years evading tax charges, as a black mark upon Holder's record.

Preparing a Splendid Attorney Resume With a Not-So-Splendid Work History
By Emily Sanderson
A functional resume format can draw attention to those areas of an individual's legal experience that he or she seeks to emphasize in a job search, even if those areas are not the former mainstay of the individual's career to date. This approach is particularly helpful when a career shift is required.
Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan recently wrote a book about his occupational misfortunes, and he's now making a lot of money off of it. Most other professionals, however, might not recover so easily from the effects of nasty political struggles at their former places of employment.

Legal Blog Round-Up: 12.2.2008 Edition
By Liz Jernigan
Can you believe it's already December? It's amazing how fast time flies by, especially during the holiday season. Just like you and me, law firms are busy around this time of year, too. Typically it's a lot of holiday party gossip (not so much this year) and bonus speculation (again, less than normal this year), but this year is different. Instead of champagne and bonus checks, it's layoff speculation and the like.

Simpson Thacher & Barlett cut associate year-end bonuses by half, ranging from $17,500 for first years to $32,500 for experienced lawyers. Chairman Philip Ruegger III said the dramatic cut was a result of today's difficult economy.
